You’ve heard it said that the eyes are the window to the soul. Here in Cape Charles, we’re pretty sure that porches are the soul of the community. Porches are a big part of our culture on the Eastern Shore and certainly at Bay Creek. The porch is a beloved icon of Americana. It’s a place to catch a cool breeze, a friendly wave and maybe a nap or two.
So as we look ahead to the hip, porch-centric event that’s hitting Cape Charles this month, we find ourselves ready to relax and recharge…porch style.
Tour historic inns and discover local artisans at
‘Art Rocks the Inns’
Sunday, August 18 from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m.
Here’s what it’s all about:
The inns of Cape Charles will lend their porches to a host of artists during a different kind of art walk. Art Rocks the Inns creates ‘street-level studios’ of the charming, inviting porches of inns throughout the historic district of Cape Charles. Walk, golf cart, bicycle or drive to each of the five participating inns and B&B’s that will host the free event. You’ll see local artists showcasing all kinds of art on the porches: paintings, sculpture, glasswork, jewelry, photography and more, even food!
Walk up onto the porches, check out the art and take it all in but don’t stop there. Go right on in the door—these inns are opening their beautifully restored interiors for touring, too!
There are just a few things you’ll want to remember on this porch-to-porch excursion:
• What’s your hurry, neighbor? This is an easy going art walk and each location invites you to stay as long as you’d like. Sit a while, visit with the artists and innkeepers. The artists will be happy to tell you more about their art, and the innkeepers have great stories about the history of their lovely inns.
• Nice to meet you! You’ll probably run into a few old friends on the art walk. That’s always part of the fun of a Cape Charles event—seeing friends and neighbors. You’ll also probably leave with some new friends. There’s just something about porches—they seem to bring out the ‘neighborly’ in everyone.
The inns invite you to enjoy their charm and the visiting artists on the porch during Art Rocks the Inns. The inns are all located in the Cape Charles historic downtown district, and within 3/4 mile of one another.
