For those of us at Bay Creek, finding out how folks discovered Cape Charles is always one of our favorite things. It’s not exactly on the beaten path. And the fact that it’s a bit of a hidden jewel is one of the things that makes it so special. So we love hearing how new neighbors came to fall in love with this amazing place we call home.
For Jim and Nancy Turner of Charlottesville, Virginia, it began with an invitation. “We have family in Richmond and they invited us to join them at a house they were renting in Cape Charles for vacation,” remembers Jim.
After the Turners spent a wonderful week in Cape Charles with their children and three young grandchildren, they became interested in spending more time here. Though they’ve lived in Charlottesville for 30 years now (Jim recently retired from UVa), their original home is Wisconsin. “We liked Cape Charles. Being from Wisconsin and growing up around the Great Lakes, we have an affinity for water,” says Jim. “Cape Charles has that. It’s different from the Great Lakes, of course, but we liked it.”
“Our kids suggested we retire here, maybe restore a historic house. But we’re just not in that stage of life now,” says Jim.
“I don’t know if we’ve ever been in that stage of life,” adds Nancy, laughing.
So in the summer of 2018, while the Turners were in Cape Charles, they decided to stay an extra day to drive around and explore. That’s when they discovered Bay Creek. They took a Bay Creek Discovery Tour to see more.
“We never knew any of this was here…the golf, the homes. We didn’t know Bayside Village existed,” remembers Jim. “We thought this would be a great place for retirement, for vacations.”
When the Turners’ tour took them to Bayside Village, they liked what they saw. “We loved the shore and the water. We thought, this is great—this really feels like the beach!” says Jim. “It was unique.”
Cape Charles is a natural fit for water lovers. And it’s ideally located for the Turners—less than four hours from their current residence in Charlottesville and less than three hours from their family in Richmond.
They had found Cape Charles. They had discovered Bayside Village. Then they met the person who would create their dream home.
“Mary-Dolph and Howard Simpson were at Bay Creek the day we were touring and talked with us about what we were looking for in a home. They had great ideas and we were impressed with their knowledge about the building process. We especially liked that Mary-Dolph had design and decorating experience, too,” says Jim.
A featured Bay Creek builder, Simpson Builders has built many homes in the community and were excited to work with the Turners.
The pieces had fallen into place. They purchased a homesite in Bayside Village very near the private beach, and they began working with Simpson Builders on the design of their new home.
“Mary-Dolph invited us down to tour her personal home in Norfolk,” explains Jim. “She understood that we loved the look and feel of the Bayside Village homes. But we wanted something larger than the Cassatt Cottages. So she drew up our plans based on her home.”
The Turners’ Bayside Village home is slated to be a comfortable, coastal home custom-made for their lifestyle.
“Our home is similar to Mary-Dolph’s home but we’ll have our master bedroom downstairs,” says Jim.
“And screened porches—we love that idea,” adds Nancy.
Those aren’t the only special features of their new home. “I’m a big fisherman. I love to fish. So Mary-Dolph is creating the garage to fit my boat,” explains Jim.
The Turners’ new home is scheduled to break ground in the spring. And while they’ve never done start-to-finish construction before, they’re excited about working with Simpson Builders. They’re even more excited about the prospect of getting into their new home before year’s end.
How do they see themselves enjoying their new Bayside Village home?
“Nancy doesn’t golf but I used to. I’ve been practicing and I’m looking forward to playing again,” says Jim.
“The fitness center with the pool looks great. We’re excited to bring our grandchildren there to enjoy it,” Nancy says.
“And the beach of course,” says. “And the beach!” agrees Nancy.
Our own Shanna Colls was pleased to introduce the Turners to Bay Creek. Shanna and all of us here at Bay Creek wish Jim and Nancy the best as they create their new home this year, and we look forward to welcoming them to our community!
