CAPE CHARLES, Va. – (July 2011) –Bay Creek Resort and Club has an interesting approach to fine dining, and everyone is invited to climb on board. The Ride and Dine by Rail is the only restored Interurban Dining Service in operation today. The Bay Creek Railway is a restored 1913 Interurban railcar that operates round-trip dining excursions from Cape Charles on Virginia’s Eastern Shore.
The two-hour excursion leaves from the station on Mason Avenue and goes up to Eastville before heading back to Cape Charles. The four-course moveable feast includes local farm- and bay-to-table selections such as corn and crab chowder, Caesar salad, and a choice of jumbo lump crab cakes, roasted lemon and rosemary chicken or pan seared pork chop with bourbon and caramelized onion confit. Dessert is a fresh key lime pie. The dining car runs on the weekends, and the cost is $55 for dinner and $25 for lunch. A special children’s menu is available for $15.
The summer schedule offers dining service every Friday and Saturday at 6:30 or 7:30 p.m. through September. Lunch is offered on Saturdays at 1 p.m. Passengers can sit back, and enjoy a delicious meal and the beautiful scenery along the Eastern Shore in a one-of-a-kind rail experience.
The No. 316 car is also available for charter groups and special events. The dining car seats 30 passengers.
The restoration of the Bay Creek Railway is just one of many enhancements that developer Dickie Foster of Baymark Construction has done on his 10-year project at Bay Creek. His vision to create a community with small-town charm along the Chesapeake Bay has been realized. In 2004, Baymark built an exact replica of the Old Plantation Flats Light Station. Originally built in 1886, the lighthouse marked the entrance to the Cape Charles harbor and Old Plantation Creek. The original lighthouse was dismantled in 1962 by the Coast Guard, but the completely furnished replica is now a museum and available for tours. The Bay Creek Railway renovation was initiated in 2006 and completed in 2008.
Bay Creek Resort and Club is a development by Baymark Construction Corp. with ten neighborhoods and a resort situated adjacent to the historic town of Cape Charles on the Chesapeake Bay. Encompassing 1,729 acres near the southwestern tip of Virginia's Eastern Shore, Bay Creek has two nationally ranked Signature® golf courses designed by Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, a world-class marina, shops and dining.
