With scheduled service expected to start winter of 2007-08, Bay Creek Railway will provide a distinctive experience starting with its one-of-a-kind Interurban Dining Car service.
The cars will travel north from Cape Charles passing through towns of the Eastern Shore including Cheriton, Eastville, Machipongo, Nassawadox and Exmore. The passenger and dining cars will be elegantly fitted throughout for the safety and convenience of patrons, providing a comfortable onboard experience. On the train, travelers will find a courteous steward on the cars, whose sole duty is to ensure riders’ full enjoyment.
Bay Creek Railway is providing service with passenger and dining cars known as Interurban cars circa 1913. The cars are being restored to their period style and elegance. As "Interurbans," the cars are smaller than today’s traditional passenger cars, with overall dimensions of 9 ft. wide by 53 ft. long and 46,000 lbs. The cars will be outfitted with water closets including all modern conveniences, and will have climate control for year–round comfort. Cars will be equipped with a sound system arranged to play CDs.
The dining car has carpeted floors and windows dressed with vintage window treatments to match the interior decor. Dining car seating is on wooden chairs with seat cushions. Dining will be provided with a complete set of vintage style service. Seating at tables will accommodate 2 and 4 guest configurations. In addition to scheduled dining excursions, there will also be themed pleasure trips, wine tasting excursions, chartered trips for clubs and groups, and more. See photos of the car restoration on this website in the Railway Photo Gallery.
The interior of the passenger cars will be attractively finished in mahogany with hardwood doors, window sash and tongue & groove floor. The walls and ceilings will be finished with fine trim detailing. The passenger car will comfortably seat 42 people on reversible type seats.
Restoration of the cars is being managed by The Edwards Railcar company. Based in Alabama, Edwards is the world leader in the manufacture of vintage, self-propelled Rail Cars found today. Established in 1921, Edwards Rail Cars offer the highest quality and workmanship for over 25 years in the research,
development and manufacture of the most economical and reliable self-propelled rail car in the industry.
