Cape Charles, VA

Bay Avenue in Cape Charles, Virginia

Bay Creek borders Cape Charles on two sides. The smaller parcel, about 200 acres, extends northwest along a beach on the Chesapeake Bay and into the mouth of King's Creek.

Now experiencing a vibrant revival, Cape Charles is a Victorian gem that was built by a Pennsylvania railroad magnate in 1883. It was the southern terminus of the newly extended railroad that connected the Eastern Shore to Philadelphia and New York, and served as the transfer point for passengers and cargo arriving from, or bound for, Hampton Roads. It grew as a company town, home to railroad workers, but it was the passengers traveling through that made it thrive. The harbor of Cape Charles, the largest on the Shore, accommodated passenger ferries and barges carrying rail cars from Norfolk and Hampton.

The new charm of Cape Charles offers visitors and residents a step back in time to a quieter life with many stores, restaurants and services to enjoy life on the Chesapeake Bay. To learn more about all the Eastern Shore has to offer, visit the Tourism Commission online.
